"I took my first photograph riding a skateboard"
Hi, I’m Paul Calver, a London based photographer working globally on a diverse range of projects, from the more intimate moments of family life, to international sports campaigns.
This page is all about my approach to sports work.
“For me, running is personal. My love of running, both as a sport and as an activity, fuels my creativity as a professional photographer ” - Paul Calver
To explore this topic in more detail I sat down with model/athlete Revée Walcott-Nolan and retired athlete/model agent Dale King to discuss what makes great running photography, and how the industry is blurring the lines between performance on the track and performance in front of the camera.

A journey into the 20-year-old springboard diver and Olympian
Paul Calver’s photographs and Andy Waterman’s collected words take us inside the aerial and aquatic universe of Team GB Olympic Diver Scarlett Mew Jensen. Scarlett attended her first Olympics this year in Tokyo at the age of 19, in what was possibly the strangest Olympics in history, with no fans in arena, but with expectations and nerves as high as ever.

Whether working in a studio or out on location, Paul Calver captures authentic moments and creates crisp, distinctive images that linger long in the memory. Born in Suffolk, Paul’s first love was skating, but in 2002 he dislocated his knee on a trip to Germany, picked up a camera instead and hasn’t looked back.
He is well-known for his beautifully shot sports photography, whether it’s runners snaking through snowy mountains or surfers riding waves off the west coast of India. Personal projects like Bodies – in which he explored the perfect athlete’s form – push the parameters of his work and these experiments feed back into commissions for sportswear giants like Nike, adidas and Asics.
But there is much more to Paul’s portfolio than sports imagery and he is adept at shooting atmospheric reportage projects too. His sun-kissed Big Sur series captured the West Coast in all its glory while his work for the 81 Dean Street development won Best Design Series at the AOP Awards.
